Various trafficking groups emerged, including the Bedlam Syndicate which used Tar to activate the Meta-Gene in abducted children. Children and teens were favored in part because young runaways are more vulnerable with fewer connections, and in part because younger meta-humans are deemed more useful with a longer shelf-life. The abduction of children sparked an outcry, including televised awareness campaigns. Even those who tested negative were rarely seen again.

Children were being abducted on a vast scale to be tested for the Meta-Gene and used. The trafficking of meta-humans, and particularly meta-human children, became a global crisis. 2016-2020įollowing the revelation of the Meta-Gene, meta-humans came to be exploited by a wide variety of groups first-world nations, third-world nations, corporations, and criminal gangs. The Reach also conducted experiments on subjects with active Meta-Genes, such as Beast Boy and Impulse, to study their reactions to stress. The Reach conducted several experiments on kidnapped teenagers in an attempt to isolate, duplicate and weaponize Meta-Gene powers, resulting in the creation of five known meta-humans: Virgil Hawkins, Tye Longshadow, Eduardo Dorado Jr., Asami Koizumi and Shimmer. The Kroloteans managed to abduct several humans but their plans were effectively foiled by the Reach, who eliminated them from the Meta-Gene arms race. This prompted the Kroloteans and the Reach to investigate the origin of super human powers and attempt to exploit them. Meta-humans gained galaxy-wide attention after the Light compelled six members of the Justice League to lead an attack on Rimbor. Over the millennia, other subspecies of humans emerged from Homo meta, including Homo magi, humans with a genetic predisposition for magic, and Homo mermanus, humans capable of living and breathing underwater. The first known meta-human is believed to be Vandal Savage, who developed the Meta-Gene from the radiation of a fallen meteor around 50,000 years ago, and passed it down to humanity through generations. Some, such as Virgil Hawkins, can retain their fully human appearance, without visible abnormal features others can acquire some inhuman characteristics but still remain mostly human-looking, like Delphis, while others can have their physiology completely changed and become an unearthly creature, such as Ana von Furth. However, that render of Senua was just an early iteration of MetaHuman tech.Meta-humans can vary in appearance, depending on the nature of their Meta-Gene attributes. Going back and looking at that trailer today, it’s still incredibly impressive. Epic offers up the example of Hellblade‘s Senua from a 2019 trailer. We’ve already seen some examples of high-fidelity humans in games. While this tech is undeniably cool, there’s still the question of how useful it actually is. They dart around and flitter much like a normal human’s, and that’s just impressive. But the models made in the Unreal Engine MetaHuman creator actually have life-like eyes. Most of the time they’re lifeless little balls of white set in a character’s face. Eyes are and have always been, an extremely difficult thing for games to get right. Whether it’s in the multiple shades of grey hair on an old man or the wrinkles on their faces, each is incredibly lifelike.Īnother point of attention across all these characters is their eyes. Every character seemingly has a story written on their face. A video showing off the high-fidelity digital humans shines a light on the insanely detailed characters. Revealed today, the MetaHuman creator will let Unreal Engine users quickly create “compelling real-time digital humans.” Admittedly, these characters are remarkably realistic, just barely avoiding the uncanny valley. Take one look at the new MetaHuman creator that’s coming with Epic’s Unreal Engine and you’ll know what I mean.

And while big players like Nvidia and AMD are always pushing forward the hardware that lets graphics improve, software is also constantly improving how games look. Graphics are the least stagnant part of gaming, something that is an endless competition. As the years chug on and games continue to evolve, there’s always one thing you can count on taking leaps and bounds.
